Volunteering

Flittabus is always pleased to hear from anyone interested in becoming a volunteer driver.  Typically, drivers commit to two half days per month (mostly mornings), and schedules are agreed three months in advance.

Driving for Flittabus can be fun, and it’s also very worthwhile.  Most of our passengers are quite elderly and really appreciate that Flittabus helps them to remain independent by enabling them to get to local supermarkets, and to visit friends, etc.  Drivers often report that passengers have thanked them for their help, and many drivers gain a real sense of satisfaction from driving the buses.

Driving for Flittabus is also a good opportunity to meet other early retired people within the local area.

Driver Profile

We have both men and women drivers, typically early retired, and interested to put something back into their local community.

Of course, you need to be a safe and steady driver, but it is also important that you really do like people, and can be a flexible team player.

New drivers need to be under the age 67 when they start but can continue driving to age 79 if medically fit, and have D1 Category on their licence (which is normally the case).

Training

This is on the job, new recruits will initially be accompanied by experienced drivers on their chosen route(s) for between two and four drives, and will never be expected to drive solo until they feel completely confident to do so.  A comprehensive Driver’s Handbook is provided, and Flittabus aims to keep drivers fully informed, e.g. via the driver section of this website, by annual drivers’ meetings, regular email correspondence, and via our new closed group Facebook page.
